World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading
The upgrade option allows players to boost an item's gear rating up 700 points, and then add a final bonus. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory and heading to the kiln.
Certain items can be upgraded to increase their stats (like a perfectly rolled breakpoint armour used in melee PvP) and others, like weapons, don't change much post upgrade, so they aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Upgrades to weapons can increase their numerical stats, such as attack damage, crit chance and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons also come with an unchanging bonus that increases the damage they deal per second. Additionally some weapons come with a set bonus that activates when three or more of the same weapon are present on a unit. This bonus could be greater than the damage that an upgrade can do on its own.
The cost of upgrading a weapon varies on its rarity and current level. For example the weapon with a +2 rating will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while the +3 model requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade a weapon will increase until it needs an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones. At that point, it will reset back to one.
Upgrading weapons will also reroll their base stats. This is usually a good factor, but it could also have negative effects. For items that only see use in a particular build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs for instance) upgrading them could render them unusable unless you have an extremely lucky roll.
Armor items can be upgraded to boost their performance. For instance, if you have chests or helms, this will increase its base defense while gloves and belts increase their strength and dexterity. Armor has a rerolling feature for its Enhanced Defense percent. This means that it is able to roll down to a lower value.
The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats it will gain after upgrading, as well as the values of these stats. This means that an upgrade from an 8 attack-damage sword to an 11-attack-damage sword would result in the weapon gaining 33% attack damage.
